The Official Worry Machine® Survey
Orwell BioFutures, Inc. wants to know how you handle your anxiety. Please help us make our products better, by taking the time to answer these questions:
1) Did you attend the PALFUCON Paleofuturist Trade Conference at the Ptarmigan in Helsinki on 25.9? Did you get a chance to try out the Worry Machine®? If so, what did you think of the experience?
2) What things do you tend to worry about these days?
3) Do you generally worry quite a bit, or would you consider yourself a fairly worry-free person?
4) How do you handle your own anxiety? What kind of things do you do in order to free yourself of worries?
5) If you were to build your own Worry Machine, what features/elements would you include in the machine?
6) Do you think the Worry Machine can really transform your worries into a usable energy source? Why? Why not?
Concept summary
In contemporary society, human beings are experts at the act of worrying. Why not create a positive use out this excess energy produced by the brain? The Worry Machine® is a performance art installation that investigates the possibility of transforming human anxiety into a practical, alternative source of energy. The project features a special ‘device’ that collects peoples worries and converts them into a usable energy source in the form of biofuel and stored electricity.
The Worry Machine® explores literal and abstract notions surrounding the following concepts: science fiction, make-believe, placebo effect, therapy, ready-made art, ecological awareness, absurdity, and catharsis. On a conceptual level, the Worry Machine® also investigates the act of committing serious thought to the development of seemingly naive, impossible ideas.
The project was created by Lisa Erdman, doctoral candidate in the Department of Art and Media Pori, at Aalto University School of Art and Design – Helsinki, Finland. Erdman's research explores notions of deception, placebo effect, and fake medications that cure political problems.
